Supported Software

Supported vs. unsupported vs. prohibited software - what's the difference? Prohibited software is not allowed at OWNCS. Unsupported software is software that's not prohibited, but you accept responsibility to support yourself with any issues you may encounter. Officially supported software means you have the full backing of the Technology Department - we can only devote department time and resources to supported software, and HelpDesk requests are limited to supported software.

There are two categories of computers at OWNCS - staff computers and student computers. Staff computers are portable computers loaned to staff members and desktops in offices and not used by students. Student computers are the classroom desktops and cart portables.

Student computers are fixed software package - only the Technology Department can install/uninstall software or make changes to these machines. They are more restricted so that we can preserve a consistent experience on shared computers. The only software supported on these machines is what is provided.

Staff computers, which are more personal in nature, are much more relaxed. User accounts on staff computers have been made administrator accounts so that staff can install and uninstall software or make other modifications to their systems, including installing software that is not officially supported by the Technology Department. We encourage staff members to experiment - figuring out your own issues is a great way to learn!

Here are a few bullet points about what we do and don't officially support, along with a few recommendations:

  • OWNCS is a Google Apps-based organization! OWNCS Gmail is the only officially supported method for email. Google Calendar is used for school calendars and all OWNCS meetings and appointments. Google Drive is the recommended means of document/spreadsheet/presentation creation and storage. Google Sites is the supported platform for class/grade/school websites.
  • We strongly recommend Google Chrome when using Google Apps. Google builds things into Chrome that you don't find in other browsers, so the experience is better. Google Chrome is the only browser that offers offline support for (some) Google Apps.
  • Safari is also a supported web browser.
  • We do not support Apple Mail or iCal.
  • Any and all file sharing software is prohibited.
  • Personally owned software can be installed on staff portables providing that it was acquired by legal means and is used within the applicable licensing terms.

All software used by faculty and staff for professional/classroom purposes must be evaluated, purchased, and compliance monitored by the Technology Department.
